Lucy Shires is an urban abstract artist. One of her projects is based around texture.
The first impression given of the photo is that it is very unique compared to her other work. The reason for this is that it is the out of focus section that captures your attention rather than the in focus section. The image reminds me of broken ice or glass around the focal point, whereas the unfocused point reminds us of Christmas or fairy lights because they are very similar to glitter when they are not in focus; it is actually a photo of broken glass. Also what makes this photo unique is that if you split it in half you could get two completely different impressions from each side. One half of the photo seems more positive because it has high exposure which make it seem like it has much more colour to it than it actually has and it gives it a lighter feel. However, on the other half of the photo seems a lot darker due to the monotone colours and low contrast.
You can see broken glass which drifts out of focus to resemble fairy lights. In the clear background you can see the glass is placed on top of pavement slabs but this effect fades away as you move across the image. One half of the photo is realistic and the other half is more abstract, the photo seems to be quite modern and contemporary because it looks like something you could go out and see in every day life.
The background helps to make the photo seem realistic because it is a very normal setting which helps it which could provide a tone and mood which influences how you feel about it.

In the first image you can see the lines from the grid and how with each line going to the left, the image has less clarity as it loses focus. In the middle right square we have circled the main focal point for the image, which is a piece of glass, it is the clearest point and where the image is entered around.
Shires image uses quite cold colours and bright lighting to give the ‘glittery’ effect, space is represented as the background of the image. In the foreground of the image, space is taken up by the broken glass. The photo was taken from a diagonal angle from above. Your eye is led around the image starting from the focal point (circled) and following the inside of the blue pathway.
The main theme of the image is texture, this is because the photo is concentrated on the texture of the glass. The message that the image gives us could be that it represents a bad time in someone's life and the purpose of the work it to show that there is always light in the darkness.
Finally, my opinion on the image is that it is very unique and meaningful. At a first glance, you don't 'see' as much of the image as you do after taking a closer look at it and analysing it. After analysing it you develop your own interpretation of what the image could symbolise. This is an effective piece of work because it can be interpreted in many different ways and can speak to other people in many different ways and can make people think about what happened before this image and open up different people’s imagination.
