Aliza Razell is the second artist that I have chosen to analyse for the project ‘Self Image’. She is a Massachusetts based artist and photographer. Razell brings her work to life by combining the two mediums of water colour and photography.
She creates her work by first selecting the photo she wants to use for her edit. She then paints using watercolour the shape or object shew wishes to add to the photo. Presumably, she scans the watercolour work on to her computer and then imports it onto her photograph in Photoshop. The first photo I have looked at shows a girl being entangled by a watercolor tree. The striking purple paint really stands out against the low contrast background. This creates a lasting impression of the image which makes it effective. Like the colours in the background, the tree starts dark at the base and becomes lighter as it gets closer to the sky. This helps to make it seem as if the tree is a part of the image. In contrast, the second photo I have chosen to look at is much lighter and has more vivid colours. In this photo, there is a girl who has presumably jumped into the air, Razell has then painted wings over her back to make her seem angelic, and like she’s flying. In the third photo I have chosen to look at, the base image is in monochrome with the watercolour paint being the main focal point in the finished edit. This is effective because of how the paint runs away because it creates the impression that there is someone they want to be there who doesn’t actually exist. |
